Sometimes you can tune it out, but it always creeps up at the most inopportune times – like the moment you settle onto the sofa with a good book or just as you begin to drift off to sleep. Suddenly it starts, and no matter how hard you try to ignore its churning, clanking, humming and buzzing, your air conditioner’s irritating jumble of sounds is as close to pure torture as you can imagine. Luckily, there are a few ways to quiet air conditioner noise.
Here are a few tips:
Older air conditioners are the worst offenders. The older your unit, the more likely it is to give you all kinds of trouble. From expensive repairs and unreliable service to painfully annoying noises, sometimes old air conditioners simply aren’t worth the irritation. New systems are much quieter. In fact, some are almost silent. In other words, it may be time to consider an air conditioner replacement.
Get to the root of the problem. If your air conditioner is only a few years old, age obviously isn’t to blame. Ask a technician to come and inspect your unit. The sound you hear may be due to debris caught within the fan or a small malfunction within the motor. Depending on the issue, a specialist can usually locate and fix the problem within the same day.
Consider a sound blanket. Also called acoustic wraps, these blankets are usually made of cloth and vinyl and will block out most air conditioner noise. Additionally, because the refrigerant inside the unit cools the motor, you won’t have to worry about overheating. Keep in mind, however, that while a sound blanket may quiet air conditioner noise, it’s important to find out what’s causing the noise and make any necessary repairs.
